Why is Facebook Being Rebranded into “Meta”? What Does This Mean for the Virtual World?

Facebook has been part of our lives for the longest time. At first, it was just a social networking site that was used by people to kill time. But over time, people realized the importance of having a platform where they can have much more interaction. In recent years, the founder of Facebook acquired applications like Instagram and Whatsapp. After the acquisition, Facebook became one of the largest social media platforms. On 28th October 2021 Mark Zuckerberg announced the rebranding of Facebook under a parent company named “Meta.” Many saw it as a downside, however, Mark Zuckerberg has bigger plans in his mind.

Why Change to Meta Now?

When people have gotten used to the brand name, Facebook, it doesn’t seem like that there would be any sane reason to rebrand it with the name Meta.

As CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg announced at his Company’s annual Connect conference the mere reason for doing so is to de-link his whole brand from one product solely, Facebook. The brand name has to be generic so that it covers all the products a company is offering. In this case, the brand is so linked with one product, it was unable to justify the whole company under one product’s name. Therefore, such a shift was required.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Vision

The new brand will be represented by the Metaverse. A metaverse is a name for shared online 3D space that several companies are interested to create for their users. In the future, people would be able to teleport themselves as a hologram in real-time and be at multiple places at one time, like enjoying a movie with their friends or being at an important business meeting without having to commute there. This sort of space could not be created by sticking with one product name

What does it Mean for the Meta Users in the Future?

Some people believe that this sort of technology will provide a lot of ease and it will be time and energy saving. People would be able to enjoy small events of their lives which they were earlier missing to some other commitments at work or due to long distances. It can make long-distance relationships more intimate and office meetings more productive if people could be present in the situation through holograms.

However, there are also few people, who believe it will make the world more self-consumed and too dependent on technology. Conventional ways of communication provide exposure and social interactions make people understand each other better. Introducing such kind of technology will give an excuse to people to stay at home more. It will make them more and introverted.  These people prefer face-to-face interactions which use all five senses; touching, speaking, hearing, sight, and taste, be it in a social or professional gathering.

There is the only thing constant in this world, change. Changes are often met with resistance but overtime people realize that it was the need of time and one should always be open to new ideas like creating  a metaverse
