How To Get Your Skin Ready For the Harsh Winter Conditions

Winter is right around the corner, and with it comes colder weather. While we are super excited for the holiday season, with Christmas lights, cozy nights in, and comfortable sweaters, lower temperatures take a toll on everyone’s skin. If you notice that your skin looks a lot more dull and dry in the winter season, know that you are not alone.

That’s why we prepared some simple but effective tips that can help you bring some life to tired and dry winter skin.

Exfoliate religiously

Most of us avoid chemical exfoliants during the summer because they make our skin more susceptible to sun damage. But winter is a great time to really get that exfoliation going. If you are struggling with dry skin and flakiness, glycolic acid can be a great ingredient to bring some glow back to your face.

You can use toners, serums, or peels that contain glycolic acid once a week to three times a week. That will depend on the concentration of this active ingredient, but also on how your skin will react to it. If you are a newbie to skincare, maybe start with a less intense AHA. You can try products with ingredients such as mandelic acid, or lactic acid.

Rich moisturizers and slugging

As a general rule of thumb, colder weather means drier skin. Wind and cold air dry our skin out, and you could experience dry patches, flaking skin, and uncomfortable tightness. The best way to prevent that is to switch up your lightweight summer gel moisturizer for a thicker winter cream.

If you still need some extra hydration, try slugging. Apply a generous layer of moisturizer at night, and follow it all up with some Vaseline or Aquaphor. This will allow your moisturizer to sink in deeper into your skin cells, and it will prevent any type of trans-epidermal water loss that could occur during the night.

Pay attention to the area around the eyes

The skin around the eyes is especially thin and fragile, which is why you should be extra gentle with it during the winter season. Make sure you are using a rich under-eye cream and use sunglasses whenever you are out in the sun. While the temperatures are lower in the winter, and you won’t get sunburnt as easily as during the summer, the UVA and UVB rays can still have a toll on your skin.

Don’t forget about your lips

When talking about skincare, many often forget about the lips. The colder weather does not favor the lips either. That’s why they deserve the same care as the rest of the face. You don’t want to deal with chapped lips during cuffing season, do you?

If you usually only use lip balm, the colder months are a great time to add some additional products to your lip skincare routine. Opt for a lip peel and a sleeping mask. The peeling will help you get rid of dead skin cells that sit on top of your lips, while the sleeping mask will regenerate your lips during the night.
