Winter Eye Care: How To Prevent Dark Circles, Wrinkles, And Puffy Eyes

Winter is here, and with it comes dry, sensitive skin. The harsh winter conditions can be especially rough on the body parts where our skin is thinner than usual, like the eyes and lips. I usually keep things as simple as possible when it comes to eye care. Most of the year, I don’t even use a separate eye cream. I simply dab a bit of my regular facial moisturizer, and I’m good to go. However, winter is different.

And it’s not only the dryness that concerns me. I also have darker under-eyes than usual, and all of the holiday parties also make my eyes look puffy. While concealer can help with the darkness, it only further emphasizes puffiness and dryness. So, what can we do? There are actually a few pretty simple steps that you can take to ensure your eye area looks fresh, smooth, and rested, even in the colder months. Here are some of the best winter eye care trends.

Slugging

When it comes to slugging, it can be a double-edged sword. If you have oily skin, and you struggle with milia, this isn’t something that you want to try out. However, if your skin is dry, and you don’t usually get milia, then definitely try it out as a part of your winter eye care routine. Just apply a layer of vaseline (or any other occlusive cream) over your regular moisturizer before you go to bed. This prevents trans-epidermal water loss and helps your eye cream/moisturizer penetrate more deeply.

Eye masks

I usually don’t recommend any type of one-time-use masks, like sheet masks or eye pads. However, did you know that there are actually reusable silicone eye masks? These can be a great addition to your winter eye care. Just pop them on over your eye moisturizer while you are drinking your coffee or eating breakfast, you can put them in your fridge to give you that extra freshness kick when applied. Reusable silicone eye pads will help you get the most out of your skincare products, and they won’t harm the environment. They’re a great addition to your winter eye care regimen.

Eye rollers

While I usually don’t care for gua-shas and jade-rollers, they can be a wonderful tool to use in your winter skincare. They help with puffiness, feel great, and also can help you wake up in the morning if you put them in a cool place the night before. You can either use them on your skin after you apply a ticker serum or facial oil, or you can use them on top of the previously mentioned silicone eye pads.

Caffeine

No, I am not recommending heading out to Starbucks right away. Instead, I suggest trying out different products with caffeine as one of the ingredients for your winter eye care. Caffeine when applied topically helps constrict the blood vessels in the most superficial part of your skin. This will help with dark under eyes, and it can also help with puffiness. In addition to that, caffeine is an antioxidant, which means that it will protect your skin from oxidative stress as well.
