What Are The Best Eco-Friendly Alternatives To Sheet Masks?

Sheet masks are a great way to relax and unwind from your day while still practicing some self-care. However, as great as they are for the skin, they create so much waste. Just think about the plastic that they come wrapped in and the paper that it takes to produce a sheet mask. In addition to that, they are pretty expensive for something that is meant to be used once and then thrown away. Instead of a sheet mask, try some of these alternatives. They aren’t only eco-friendly, but also much more cost effective than traditional sheet masks.

Traditional face masks

I know that it seems like a no-brainer, but a traditional face mask can give you all of the skin benefits that you desire. I have no idea why so many people forgot about those good old face masks that you buy in larger packaging and can use multiple types. They work just as well, are much more cost-effective, and create significantly less waste. My favorite type of face mask is a sleeping mask. I just put them on before going to bed and wake up with hydrated, fresh-looking skin.

Essences

Essences are a great way to hydrate your skin in a light and non-greasy way. As a mix between a toner and a serum, an essence is the ideal addition to any skincare routine. They are a huge part of K-Beauty routines, and once you try them out, you won’t ever be without them. Essences are water-based skincare products that are so light that they feel like a traditional toner, but they deliver all of the skincare benefits of a heavier face serum. If you used sheet masks for the purpose of some extra hydration, then an essence could be the perfect replacement.

Hydrating serums

Did you know that the liquid that the sheet masks are covered in actually has similar ingredients to regular face serums? The only difference is that the mask helps penetrate the products better because it blocks the liquid from evaporating from your skin. Most people would even squeeze the excess liquid from their sheet mask and use it as a traditional face serum. So if you haven’t picked out a face serum for your skincare routine yet, I would definitely suggest looking into one. You can look up the ingredients that are in your favorite sheet mask, and try to find a serum with similar actives.

Reusable silicone masks

Did you know that you can buy reusable silicone face masks? That means that you can still get that relaxing feeling of a sheet mask, without harming the environment. The way they work is that they form a protective layer between the environment and your skin, and therefore help your skincare penetrate into your skin more deeply. You can apply your whole skincare routine underneath the mask, or just light and hydrating products like essences and serums. I personally enjoy using a few layers of facial essence topped with a hyaluronic acid serum underneath my silicone sheet mask. If you want to go all out, you can also buy reusable silicone eye patches to get all of the wellness feels. They work great for de-puffing my under-eye area, especially when paired with a coffee-based eye serum.
