The Science Behind Skinimalism: Glow With Minimal Effort

It’s no secret that there’s a new skincare trend every week. Even though skincare isn’t as big on social media as it once was during the pandemic, a lot of us still enjoy investing our money, time, and energy into caring for our skin. But have you ever noticed that the more you do the worse your skin looks? I know that I have. Every time I overdo it with my products or treatments, my skin completely freaks out. I had to learn the hard way that less truly is more when it comes to skincare and that skinimalism is the way to go.

What is Skinimalism?

Skinimalism, obviously, comes from the two words skin and minimalism. This beauty trend basically promotes a more simple and more easy-going approach to skincare. Instead of an excessive 10-step routine, you should allow your skin the time and space to heal itself. The concept behind Skinimalism is simple – the less you do to your skin, the better. Here’s a breakdown of the science behind this trend:

Your skin balances out itself

Your skin’s pH, hydration, and oils are all naturally regulated. Using too many products or harsh ingredients, which can result in rashes, breakouts, and other skin issues, can throw off this balance. Simplifying your skincare routine allows your skin to maintain its natural balance, which can result in a healthier, more radiant complexion.

Our skin is capable of healing

Although it takes time, your skin can heal and regenerate on its own. Overusing skin care products can impede this process by preventing your skin from fully healing. Lessening the number of products you use and giving your skin the time and space it requires to heal and rejuvenate may assist you in achieving a smoother, healthier complexion.

Sun protection is key

One of the most important steps in any skincare routine is sun protection. Sun damage can lead to premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and even skin cancer. So no matter how much you decide to simplify your routine and get rid of any unnecessary products, we want to emphasize how important it is to still use sunscreen. This will not only help prevent premature signs of aging but also more serious conditions such as skin cancer.

Ways to minimize your routine

It’s not nearly as complicated as you may think. Just make sure you stick to the basics – a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Look for products with minimal ingredients and avoid harsh chemicals or fragrances that can irritate your skin. Focus on simply hydrating your skin and restoring the natural barrier of your skin. Even though additional steps such as exfoliators and face masks can be a fun way to pamper yourself, they are in no way a necessity.

Last but not least, simply listen to what your skin is telling you. If you’re experiencing irritation, redness, and rashes – you’re probably using way too strong products. There isn’t a right and wrong way to do skin care. You simply have to find something that works for both your skin type and your lifestyle. But some steps like SPF, double cleansing, and moisturizing should almost never be skipped.
