The Dos and Don’ts of Nail Care: How to Keep Your Nails Healthy and Strong

I love having pretty nails. It makes me feel so put together and sophisticated. However, nails are so much more than just a fashion accessory. I’ve heard so many horror stories about people who got a dangerous infection simply from pulling on their cuticles or biting their nails. That’s why you shouldn’t neglect them even if you’re not someone who enjoys having long and painted nails. So if you want to have healthy and strong nails, here are the dos and don’ts of nail care that you should follow.

Don’t: Bite Your Nails or Use Them as Tools

While this is a pretty obvious one, a lot of us are still biting our nails. Especially when feeling bored or anxious. How can you expect your nails to grow long and strong if you constantly bite them? In addition to the appearance, it’s also incredibly unhygienic and dangerous to do that. You’re risking getting an infection and seriously damaging your health. Also, make sure you don’t use your nails as tools to open packages or scratch surfaces. This will make them more prone to breaking and chipping.

Nail Care Do: Moisturize Your Nails and Cuticles

Just like your skin, your nails and cuticles also need moisture to stay healthy. Apply a moisturizing cream or oil to your nails and cuticles daily to keep them hydrated and prevent them from becoming dry and brittle. You don’t have to use anything expensive or fancy. Natural oils such as jojoba oil or coconut oil can work amazingly as well. Apply the oil or cream at night before you go to sleep, and you will wake up with soft and moisturized cuticles. This is a great step to add to your regular nail care.

Don’t: Pick at Your Cuticles

This is probably one of the worst habits that you could have, and not only because it damages the look of your hands and nails. Picking at your cuticles can cause serious infections, and lead to inflammation and other serious health problems. Sure, you can use a cuticle pusher to remove any dead skin around your nails. However, don’t pick at them when you’re nervous or anxious. I know that’s easier said than done, but try carrying a stress ball with you.

Nail Care Do: Protect Your Nails

I have to admit – I’m pretty bad at this too. However, make it a habit to protect your nails from everyday damage by wearing gloves when doing household chores or simply working with your hands. The harsh chemicals that we use for cleaning can not only dry out our skin but also seriously weaken our nails. Even plain water has the tendency to weaken our nails and make them break off more easily while wet. So make sure you’re wearing gloves whenever you’re cleaning.

Don’t: Ignore Changes in Your Nails

Now, this is a bit more serious, and it actually has a lot to do with your health. We tend to ignore any changes in the color, texture, or shape of our nails. But did you know that they can indicate underlying health problems? That’s why you have to pay attention to any sudden changes in your nails and seek medical attention if you notice anything unusual. Paying attention to the condition of your nails is a large part of regular nail care.
