Why Color-Treated Hair Needs Some Extra Care And How To Do It Right

Virgin hair and chemically treated hair don’t require the same level of care and maintenance. First of all, let’s keep things real — hair dye is drying. Especially if you have bleached your hair. But in addition to that, your hair color can also fade over time, making your once vibrant hue appear dull and lifeless. That’s why it’s so important to know how to care for color-treated hair in the right way.

I know that no one wants to hear this. However, when you color your hair, you’re essentially damaging the hair shaft to allow the dye to penetrate. This can leave your hair feeling dry and brittle. Eventually, you may notice an increase in split ends and breakage. Because the hair dye also strips your hair from its natural oils, you could notice that your hair is significantly drier than before.

How To Care For Color-Treated Hair

Don’t let what we’ve said before scare you. Just because you have color-treated hair doesn’t mean that your mane can’t be long and healthy. It’s just important to know how to give it the proper care and maintenance.

While most people with virgin hair can get away with just using shampoo and conditioner, you will have to follow a few extra steps. Here are some haircare tips that everyone with color-treated hair should follow.

Use A Color-Safe Shampoo

Using a shampoo designed specifically for color-treated hair is one of the most important steps in taking care of colored hair. These shampoos are made to be gentle and won’t remove the color from your hair. Because sulfates can strip the hair of its natural oils and color, look for sulfate-free options.

Limit Heat Styling

Color-treated hair can become even more damaged by using hot styling products like flat irons, curling irons, and hair dryers. Strive to use heat styling tools as rarely as possible. But when you do, use a heat protectant spray or serum. Let your hair dry naturally and learn to do some heatless hairstyles.

Use A Deep Conditioning Treatment

To keep it healthy and avoid breakage, color-treated hair needs more moisture and hydration than virgin hair. You can nourish and strengthen your hair by applying a deep conditioning treatment once to twice a week. Find something with nourishing ingredients such as argan oil, shea butter, coconut oil, or glycerin.

Avoid Chlorine And Saltwater

Saltwater and chlorine are particularly bad for anyone with color-treated hair. Saltwater can further dry out the hair while chlorine can remove its color, or even change it. If you want to go swimming, put on a swim cap or apply a leave-in conditioner before getting into the water. This will protect your hair while also keeping the color vibrant.

Get Regular Trims

To maintain the health of your hair and avoid split ends, get regular haircuts. Even if you’re aiming to grow out your hair, regular trims are an absolute must. If your hair is breaking off at the ends, you won’t be able to get any additional length. Get a haircut at least once every three months.

Use a UV-Protective Spray

UV rays can harm colored hair as well, making it dry and brittle. Protecting your hair from the sun’s damaging rays can be done by using a UV protectant spray. This is especially important if you’re living somewhere sunny or you’re traveling to a warmer area. Besides UV sprays, you can also protect your hair with the help of hats.
