How To Choose The Perfect Nude Lipstick According To Your Skin Undertone

Lipstick is much more than just makeup. As ridiculous as it may sound to some people, lipstick has the power to empower a woman and give her additional confidence. Coco Chanel once said: “If you’re sad, add more lipstick and attack”, and that quote truly sums up the power of good lipstick. But the emphasis is on good. Not every lipstick color will look good on every woman. You have to choose a shade that fits your skin tone, hair color, and overall style. And don’t even get me started on choosing the right formula. Luckily, there’s nude lipstick for every occasion.

There are so many lipsticks available on the market that it can seem a bit overwhelming. Things get especially complicated when it comes to nude lipstick. No nude shade is the same. They vary in depth of color, undertone, finish, and more. To help you on your journey to finding the perfect nude lipstick, here are some tips on how to pick the right color according to the undertone of your skin.

How to determine the undertone of your skin

There are three types of skin undertones: warm, cool, and neutral. People with a warm undertone will have more yellow pigments in their skin, while people with cool undertones have more pink pigments. When it comes to people with neutral undertones, they are a mixture of both.

Once you learn which category you belong to, it will be easier to choose not only the right shade of lipstick but also the shade of liquid foundation and blush. To determine the undertone, start with your hands: look at the veins on the inside of the wrist on the hand. Blue or purple veins indicate a cool undertone, while green ones mean you have a warm undertone. If you can’t tell for sure, then it’s possible that your undertone is neutral.

Also, skin with a warm undertone has more melanin and therefore darkens easily and quickly in the sun, unlike skin with a cool undertone, which is more prone to burns and redness. If you need more confirmation, think about whether gold or silver jewelry suits you better. If gold helps your skin to glow, then you have a warm undertone. If you’re more of a silver girl, then you probably have a cool undertone. If you feel like both gold and silver look great on your skin, then you probably have a neutral undertone.

Lipstick shades and skin undertones

In general, women with cool undertones prefer cooler shades that contain blue and purple undertones. So if you have a cool undertone to your skin, opt for pinkish nude shades with a blueish base. One example would be MAC’s lipstick in the shade Mehr.

Do you have a warm undertone? In that case, you should also opt for warmer lipstick shades with peach and orange undertones in them. Your best option would be a brown nude color, one to two shades darker than your natural lip color. A great example is MAC’s lipstick in the shade Kinda Sexy.

If you are one of those lucky people who have a neutral skin undertone, then we have some great news for you — most lipstick shades will look great on you! It’s up to you to determine if you feel more confident with blue-based or orange-based lipstick.
