Feeling Dizzy And Lightheaded After A Workout? Here’s What You Have To Know

It is completely normal to feel slight weakness and lightheadedness after a workout. But although this usually does not indicate a problem, it is important to know the difference between what is normal and what is not. In some cases, shakiness and tremors after working out can indicate more serious problems. This is especially true of the kind of tremors that continue long after you’ve finished your workout. If you regularly experience feeling dizzy or these after-effects of exercise, read on to find out the potential causes and ways to prevent them.

What causes weakness and tremors after exercise?

As we have already explained, for most people it will be more than normal to feel a little lightheaded or weak after exercising. After a while, you will go back to normal, and be ready for a new workout. The most common reasons for this include:

Muscle weakness

During physical activity, the central nervous system sends signals to move the muscles. The longer you exercise, the weaker these signals become, and this results in the muscles changing from contraction to relaxation. All this results in tremors. In addition to tremors, signs of muscle weakness include weakness, muscle pain, and lack of energy. If you experience muscle weakness, it generally means that you have overexerted yourself and that you need to reduce the intensity of the exercises.

Holding the muscles too long in one position

Tremors and shakiness can occur due to holding the muscles in one position for too long. This often happens if you have been in a plank position for a long time or during weight-lifting exercises. Therefore, if you focused on one muscle group during training and then felt a tremor, you know what the cause is. There is most likely no need to worry at all. Just make sure that you give your body a little time to rest between sets.

Low blood sugar

Your muscles use glucose for fuel. During exercise, your blood glucose levels can drop. This is especially common if the training is intense or long, and you’re on a low-carb diet. Without enough “fuel”, your muscles start to shake. Other symptoms of low blood sugar include fatigue, hunger, headache, dizziness, confusion, irritability, weakness, and rapid heartbeat.

Dehydration

Hydration is extremely important for maintaining a normal level of electrolytes in the body. Electrolytes control the function of your nerves and muscles. During intense and long training sessions, people often sweat and lose large amounts of fluid. If you lose too much fluid from your body and become dehydrated, you may experience muscle tremors and cramping. In addition, you will also feel fatigued, and thirsty, have headaches, dizziness, and weakness, and you will most likely notice changes in the color of your urine.

Too much caffeine

Many people like to drink coffee or some other caffeinated energy drinks before working out. But if you consume too much of it, you can become anxious and feel a certain restlessness in your body. The tremors that come from excessive caffeine intake are mainly reflected in the hands and palms. Among other symptoms, you will notice rapid heartbeat, dizziness, insomnia, nausea, diarrhea, and increased blood pressure.

When do things become more serious?

While most of these causes are completely benign, there are certain situations that should be addressed by a physician. If the weakness and tremors persist even a few hours after your workout is completed, make sure to contact your doctor. While feeling a bit worn out from our workouts isn’t something to worry about, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
