The 80s Are Back: Everyone Is Wearing This Nostalgic Hairstyle

The 80s are back! And this time, it’s in the form of a cult classic hairstyle, the perm. But don’t panic right away. No, it’s not the same type of perm that our moms used to wear. The “modern perm” is a wonderful way to give yourself a new look and style, without looking like you walked out of a 80s sitcom.

Depending on the length and thickness of the hair, the procedure takes between one and a half and two hours. And if you don’t want to commit to one hairstyle for too long, this modern perm technology can ensure that the hairstyle is only semi-permanent, and lasts between 2 and 10 months. In addition, the modern perm is much gentler on your hair than it used to be.

What is the “modern perm”?

Too young to remember what a perm is? Let us help you. Think, for example, of Sarah Jessica Parker’s voluminous and vibrant hair, which enchanted women around the world in the 1980s and 1990s.  Because most nostalgic trend are making a huge comeback right now, it was inevitable that the perm is also coming back in 2022.

But there is a big qualitative difference between modern perms and those of the previous generation. Today, modern procedures and the latest technologies are used for this hairstyle. Instead of wrapping the hair around tiny, hard plastic rods, stylists now use larger, flexible foam rods that come in all sorts of sizes.

The result is curls and waves that are less uniform (not all the same size and going in different directions) that look much more natural. No two curls or waves are the same.

Modern lotion for permanent curls is much gentler, and the products do not contain ammonia. Without ammonia, however, a perm product cannot penetrate the hair as deeply, which is why perms don’t last as long as they used to. It’s more of a semi-permanent perm that’s ideal for people who want to change up their hairstyle more frequently.

Which hair types are suitable for the modern perm?

Did you know that people with naturally curly hair can also have permanent treatments? Yes! If you want to have tighter and stronger curls, you can get a perm hairstyle. They don’t just apply to people with straight hair. However, if you color or lighten your hair frequently, you need to be careful. Bleached hair and perms don’t mix well.

Can the hairstyle trend damage your hair?

As long as you have had a consultation with an experienced hairdresser beforehand, everything should be fine. Hair that is in a healthy condition before perming will not be damaged by a good hairdresser. You and your hairstylist can determine what is best for the health of your hair and plan how you want the final perm to look.

What to do after your appointment

After the perm, your hair needs time to harden. You should leave it alone and not tie it up, wash it, or style it in any other way. You should give the chemicals 24-48 hours to seal in the curls. Washing could deactivate the chemicals, and tying up could ruin the shape. Your stylist should tell you all the rules to keep your curls as long as possible.
