5 Signs You Could Be Using The Wrong Moisturizer

When it comes to skincare products, moisturizers may be the most basic ones. Even if you are a complete skincare minimalist, chances are you are still using moisturizer. But as widely available and commonly used as they are, it can still be difficult to choose the right one for your skin type.

However, there are five clear signs that you are currently using a cream that is not the right one for you. We will go over each one of them, and help you decide if your current moisturizer is the right choice.

You feel a burning sensation

If your skin is extremely sensitive, you will most likely feel that the cream does not suit you right from the first application. Expect to feel a slight stinging that slowly turns into irritation. A common mistake is that we justify skin irritation at the beginning of using a new skincare product by saying that it is normal and that it means the product is working. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. With moisturizing creams, stinging is not something you want to experience. Moisturizers should be gentle and hydrating, and not full of ingredients that could irritate your skin.

Acne and breakouts

You may not immediately associate pimples with face cream, but their unusual appearance can be due to an inadequate reaction of the skin to the cream and its ingredients. If you aren’t prone to breakouts, but you do notice pimples after switching up your moisturizer, chances are that the cream is to blame. Heavier and greasier creams can cause acne and skin inflammation. If you are prone to acne breakouts, always choose oil-free formulations with ingredients such as niacinamide.

Redness and rashes

There are many reasons why your skin is red and sore after applying the cream, and one of the simplest is that you have a sensitive skin type. In addition, you may be allergic to some of the cream’s ingredients without even knowing it, or your skin may have reacted to the artificial fragrance of the face cream. Simplicity is the key. It is recommended to choose mild, hypoallergenic formulations with no added fragrance.

Your moisturizer has a very strong smell

Remember, artificial fragrances in cosmetics serve to mask the smell of the raw materials from which the product is made. However, fragrance is a very common irritant and can cause contact dermatitis in people with extremely sensitive skin. If you are particularly sensitive to fragrances, choose fragrance-free creams. Yes, they don’t feel as lux, but they won’t freak out your skin.

Oily skin in the morning

If you notice that your skin is too shiny in the morning, you may be using a night cream that is too heavy. Creams that are rich in oils or fatty alcohol are only a good option for people with dryer skin types. If you have a problem with choosing the right moisturizer texture, play it safe and choose water-based creams or gel formulas. They will hydrate your skin, while still being light and non-greasy.
