How Often Should You Wash Your Hair Based On Your Hair Type?

The question that each of us has probably asked ourselves at least once is “how often should we wash our hair?”. Many have fallen into a routine and wash their hair every few days, not because it is necessary for them, but because of habit.

However, depending on the texture, there are certain “rules” for how often you should wash your hair, as some hair requires more frequent washing than others, and deviating from the optimal washing frequency can do more harm than good.

Contrary to popular belief, washing your hair less often will not make your hair less oily, nor will washing your hair every day permanently remove sebum from your scalp. The scalp is an extension of the skin of the face, so it, like the rest of the body, accumulates dirt, dead skin cells, sweat, and sebum. That’s why hair and scalp should be washed regularly because a clean and healthy scalp means healthy hair.

Thin and fine hair

If you have thin, fine, and silky hair, chances are that you have to wash it every one to two days. Thin hair is easily “loaded” with oil, dirt, and product buildup. It gets weighed down and appears flat and greasy. Sure, some dry shampoo can help you extend your hair wash for a day. However, this hair type still has to be washed more frequently than others. Because you have to wash your hair so often, make sure you use a gentle shampoo without sulfates. Also, don’t forget to condition.

Medium hair

Medium hair is, as the name says, somewhere in the middle between fine and thick hair. Your individual hair strands aren’t too thin, but you don’t believe that they’re particularly thick either. This is a great hair type to work with, and you can count yourself as being blessed because you get the best of both worlds. You can extend your hair washes every two to three days, with some dry shampoo in between. You probably have some volume, so your hairstyle won’t appear as flat as with fine hair. Make sure you use a good shampoo that effectively cleanses your scalp, but you can also use some hair masks, as your hair isn’t as easily weighted down.

Thick and coarse hair

Coarse hair is the thickest of all hair textures. Your individual hair strands have a wide diameter, and you also have a lot of hair. That means that the oil your scalp produces has a lot of hair to attach to, and your scalp won’t appear greasy even a few days after washing your hair. You can go without washing your hair for four to five days, and even longer if you use dry shampoo. While an oily scalp is none of your concerns, your ends probably tend to feel dry. Deep conditioning is the most important thing for these hair types. So make sure you always use a mask and leave in products after washing your hair. Hair oils, serums, and leave-in conditioners will be your hair’s BFFs.

Curly

Curly is among the most sensitive due to its unique structure. It tends to break, so you need to be gentle with the curls, especially when it comes to brushing. Curls have a delicate structure, which means that they quickly absorb moisture. But they also lose moisture, so the strands remain dry and brittle. People with curly hair should introduce deeply nourishing and moisturizing products such as oils, conditioners, and hair masks into their hair care routine. As for the frequency of washing, it is similar to that for fine hair. It won’t look greasy, but for the health of the scalp, no more than four days should pass between washings.
