What are the Key Ingredients You Want in Your Skincare that Help Get Rid of Acne?

Acne is, perhaps, the most typical problem in the dermatological world.

Despite being extremely common, acne can be really difficult to treat. Because in order to get desirable results, one needs to get to the underlying cause of it. Once that is settled, you need to determine which product is going to be best for you to prevent it from coming back.

With the rise in chemical-based skincare, we are more inclined toward using products specifically developed to treat our skin issues. The market is filled with products advertising to be ‘anti acne’ and promising a clear, blemish-free skin. This only creates confusion as we end up splurging on things that are either not suited for our skin or are targeted toward a completely different type of acne.

However, there are some key ingredients that help the majority of skin problems. These are the key ingredients that are especially tried and tested for getting rid of acne. We suggest you keep an eye out for these and incorporate them into your regime.

1. Salicylic acid

One of the most widely used chemicals in acne treatment, Salicyclic Acid is an oil-soluble, beta hydroxy acid or BHA. This is especially wondrous for people with oily skin as it helps break down oil, which is known to clog pores and cause whiteheads and blackheads.

Hence, the removal of all excess oil from your skin prevents acne formation. Salicylic acid is also a well-known exfoliator. It removes dead skin and debris, preventing your pores from getting clogged.

2. Benzoyl peroxide

Acne is caused by various bacteria, which, unseen to the human eye, live on the skin. Benzoyl peroxide effectively removes such microbes. It also removes excess oil and exfoliates the skin leaving you with cleaner pores, ultimately leading to clearer skin.

3. Retinol

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative and one of the most effective ingredients for treating acne. This ingredient is highly effective because it removes oil, dirt, and bacteria from pores. These are the main acne-causing agents. With the removal of these, you are left with clear and renewed skin. Furthermore, retinol also helps in fading acne scars and blemishes by exfoliating the skin.

4. Azelaic acid

Keratin is a fibrous protein structure found in the top layer of your skin. In layman’s terms, keratin is basically made up of dead skin cells which will prevent your skin from getting damaged. Excess keratin can cause your pores to become clogged which leads to the dreaded acne. Azelaic acid breaks down keratin and unclogs your pores, in turn preventing acne.

 5. Vitamin C

Most of the time acne is accompanied by redness and inflammation. Vitamin C is a natural anti-inflammatory agent. Hence, reducing the inflammation decreases the intensity of the acne flareups.

It is important to note that many of these ingredients, such as retinol and salicylic acid, increase sun sensitivity. A sunblock or sunscreen is your best friend when using active skincare ingredients like the ones mentioned above. Never miss SPF as the sun can also be a trigger for acne and hyperpigmentation.
